Presentation

As soon as we began the first Conference, we became aware of the fact that we had achieved, for the first time, to expose all of the problems related to the bicycle in our country. At the Conference an opinion poll about the perception and use of the bicycle in Catalonia was presented, which showed us that there were many more users than we had imagined, that there were hundreds of thousands of bicycles, and that a great majority of the people wanted the Administrations to act with policies favorable to the bicycle.

The approved manifest was and is the recipe of the integral policies for favoring the sustainable mobility and the use of the bicycle. The constitution itself of the Board of the Bicycle of Catalonia, the approval of the Strategic Plan, the edition of the Manual for the design of the cycling paths of Catalonia, the irruption of the public bicycle with a tremendous success, the first Conferences of the Public Bicycle have emerged under the influx of the first Conference. The consensus assumed by a part of the politicians with the signing of the Manifest, and the constitution, for the first time in a formal manner, of the Intergroup of the Support to the Bicycle of the Parliament of Catalonia, endorses the work done positively and motivates us towards a new Conference.

At the 2nd Catalan Bicycle Conference we pretend to approach three questions that are related to the extension of the phenomenon of the bicycle: Communication, Health and Education. We want to get to know good and new practices in the sector of education, and we also want to be up to date of the scientific advances with regard to the bicycle and health. We should also like for the prestigious communicators to make their contribution about how to treat the implantation of the bicycle and for them to make proposals about how to improve the social status of our vehicle.

Our event is one that is rooted to Catalonia, but we intend for it to acquire a projection with a more international character. Due to this, the Organizing Commission, and in agreement with the ECF (European Cyclist’s Federation), plans to have an International Conference within the Conference that, on this occasion, will be dedicated to a little treated topic in international forums, but very much up to date and with perspectives, such as that of the "Police and the Bicycle”. At this Conference we will become acquainted with the police corps as bicycle users and in their task of law, regulation and by-law application.

Thus, it is a good moment to ask for an active participation of persons and entities, of health instructors and workers, of reporters, of municipal technicians, of university students and students and professionals involved in safety. It is a moment when the firms related to the world of the bicycle can show us its novelties, and it would also be the time to get to know (through scientific data), how we have evolved since the first Conference and to find out about what happens with the bicycle in the rest of the country.
